I thought you'd get a kick out of that !
I thought the original name of St. Petersburg was indeed St. Petersburg, named after Peter The Great (and there's a huge statue of him in the city, commissioned by Catherine The Great). But in the beginning of the 1900's, before the Russian Revolution and the end of the Romanov years, when the War had already started, they changed it to Petrograd because "St. Petersburg" sounded too german. After the Revolution they named it Leningrad, and just recently it went back to its original name, St. Petersburg.
Pardon my nerdiness.
Coincidentally, the same thing happened with Kitchener, Ontario...
I know, it was named Berlin. I really AM a nerd!
